The best clematis for beginners

Everybody starts at some point - and that probably applies to gardening with clematis, too. As with roses, however, the initial motivation is faced with an at least equally bewildering abundance of possibilities. Even worse, the numerous clematis varieties are divided into even more botanical species than the beloved queen of flowers. On top of that, they also differ fundamentally in growth, care, areas of use and winter hardiness.

Here we show you tried-and-tested, low-maintenance and above all healthy and robust clematis - which will certainly also give experienced gardeners a few pointers for the right choice at more problematic sites.

For the selection we followed the list 'Clematis for Beginners' of the International Clematis Society. We have added further rewarding and very hardy clematis that we are convinced of.

Because of the diversity among clematis, however, this list of varieties should only be seen as a 'suggestion'. As a rule, similar clematis (which, for example, have a slightly different colour) are, according to the information and descriptions, not necessarily more complicated to keep and are just as frost-resistant and healthy. We cannot - and do not wish to - give any guarantee for this, though. If in doubt, it is also worth using the search in our garden forum or asking there for information.

If you find what you are looking for in these suggestions, please observe, in addition to the care instructions in the relevant description, the general growth characteristics and requirements of the respective group. These are well linked from the product page and can be found in each case in the upper area. We would expressly recommend beginners in particular to read our 'Clematis knowledge'.
