Clematis terniflora 'Early Snow' was selected in 2002 by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński from seed collected at a natural site in Japan, and introduced to the market in 2014. Its 2–3 cm fragrant flowers are pure white and star-shaped, with four to five narrow petals and white stamens, borne in dense clusters.
At 300 to 400 cm, 'Early Snow' is ideal for fences, pergolas and trellises, and thanks to its twining leaf stalks it also happily clambers into small shrubs or trees. From September to November – lasting into November in mild autumn weather – it covers itself in clouds of white blossom; it thrives in a sunny to semi-shaded spot with the root area kept cool.
'Early Snow' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and easy to care for: since it flowers on the current year's growth, cut it back hard to about 10 cm in March. This lets the robust, undemanding cultivar reshoot vigorously in spring and build up its characteristic mass of flowers again by autumn.
