Clematis 'Kjell' was raised by Swedish breeder S. Widberg from a cross between 'Poulala' and 'Vino'; it is named after his friend Kjell Bolinder. Its large, 10 to 15 cm flowers glow in deep purple with a velvety sheen and striking yellow stamens.
At around 200 cm in height, 'Kjell' suits trellises, obelisks and container growing on patios and balconies. It flowers in two phases – from May to June and again from July to August – and shows its rich colour best in sunny to semi-shaded spots.
'Kjell' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June after the first flowering.
