Clematis 'Rouge Cardinal' was raised in 1968 by the French breeder A. Girault from a cross of 'Ville de Lyon' × 'Pourpre Mat'. The name – meaning 'Cardinal Red' – reveals the variety's greatest asset: its velvety, deep crimson flowers, 8–10 cm across. Six rounded petals frame creamy-white filaments and red-brown anthers. As the blooms mature, the colour deepens to a rich purplish-crimson of incomparable intensity.
From July to September, 'Rouge Cardinal' produces its flowers in great profusion on trellises, fences and obelisks; at 200 cm in height, it is well suited to smaller gardens and terraces alike. It is especially effective against a light background – a conifer or a white-rendered wall makes the dark flowers truly stand out. It also performs well in containers; shrubs or climbing roses needing their base covered make natural planting companions.
'Rouge Cardinal' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C), making it fully suitable for Central European gardens. In March, cut the stems back to about 50 cm – a hard prune encourages strong new growth and a generous summer display. The variety is not demanding as to site, but prefers nutrient-rich, moist yet well-drained soil.

Very vigorous plant with a luminous colour, in my case a rather darker one. Lovely contrast to light roses and white shrubs.Automatically translated · Show original
Especially beautiful thanks to especially hard pruningFor the first time after 5 years I cut my ROUGE CARDINAL back to 30 cm above the ground, which had been recommended in a garden guide. I was rewarded with a surprising, new splendour: the beauty climbed well over 2 metres and delights with its great colour and velvety skin!Automatically translated · Show original
