A selection of roses that have received at least one of the two most important awards in Europe, AGM (Award of Garden Merit of the RHS) or ADR.
ADR roses: varieties proven in German trial gardens
Roses awarded the ADR rating were tested for 3 years in a rigorous trial in 11 trial gardens spread across the country.
ADR stands for 'General German Rose Novelty Trials' (Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprüfung)
which also implies that only novelties are tested.
The varieties must be entered for testing by the rose breeder. If a variety passes the test, it becomes an ADR rose. After 10 years the breeder must decide whether the ADR rating is to be extended. If the breeder believes the rose no longer meets the requirements, he can also decline the extension.
Proven older varieties such as Rose de Resht or Ghislaine de Féligonde are therefore excluded. Novelties from foreign breeders can be submitted for ADR testing by members of the BdB (Bund Deutscher Baumschulen, the German Nursery Association). This is also done, and some Delbard roses and Meilland roses became ADR roses in this way. Many varieties - such as David Austin's English Roses - will however continue to forgo this award.
