Evergreen clematis
Almost all clematis shed their leaves over the winter, but there are also a few evergreen clematis - some of them, strictly speaking, do not carry leaves all year round but shed them over the summer. For these varieties (above all from the Cirrhosa group), wintergreen would be the more accurate description.
Many of the evergreen varieties are fragrant, but most of them are not hardy outdoors in our climate. This lack of hardiness means that in our latitudes they are mostly found in conservatories, large cold greenhouses or very sheltered spots in mild regions such as the Breisgau, around Lake Constance or in cities in the Rhineland.
The smaller, less vigorous New Zealand varieties can also be overwintered well in a tub and put outdoors over the summer.
