Rosa damascena and autumn damask roses
As early as 1000 BC, the twice-flowering autumn damask rose was planted on Samos in honour of Aphrodite. Later it was revered in Rome together with the goddess of love, Venus.
The flower colour of the summer and autumn damask roses ranges from pure white to bright purple. Almost all Damask roses have a heavy fragrance. The best-known varieties in the group of Rosa Damascena are Rose de Resht, Ispahan, Jacques Cartier and the Bulgarian oil rose Trigintipetala from which rose oil is still made to this day.
A Damask rose grows into a shrub of up to about 150 cm. Most have a mostly vigorous habit with long, arching branches. In particular the repeat-flowering Rosa Damascena sometimes also grow compact and bushy and are also suitable for smaller gardens.
