Clematis 'Piilu' was raised in 1984 by the Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik from a cross of 'Hagley Hybrid' and 'Mahrovyi'. Its name means "little duckling" in Estonian. The 8–12 cm flowers are pink with violet stripes, with mauve tones, irregular white markings and a textured surface. In spring they are semi-double to double; in late summer they are single and sometimes a little paler. The centre is creamy white to pale yellow.
The first flush on last year's shoots appears from May to June, and the second follows from July to September. At around 200 cm, 'Piilu' stays compact and suits small supports in the garden, an obelisk, or a container on a balcony, veranda or roof terrace. It thrives in sunny to partly shaded spots and copes with chalk, clay and sandy soils, though it is happiest in moist, well-drained soil.
'Piilu' is exceptionally hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and is considered robust and easy to grow. Cut the plant back to about 75 cm in June. This keeps it compact and ensures a rich late-summer flowering.

The super beautiful, romantic clematis par excellence! Very robust, not very tall, shining from afar, the double flowers in spring are gorgeous. Blooms lavishly. (However, because of its strong color it doesn't go with every pink rose.) I'm always longing for it and have several specimens in the garden! (Thanks to its smaller size it's certainly also great for containers!)

A super beautiful clematis! It's now in its third year in a container and has become more beautiful and bushier with every year. Absolutely reliably persistent and richly flowering.
I had bad luck with this clematis. A week after I bought it, the flowers were eaten off within a few days. I couldn't tell who or what caused it. After that it began to wilt and the leaves all turned completely dry.
Is this the notorious clematis wilt?
Who knows about this and can give me a tip?
I think this clematis is beautiful. At first I had it in a container, where it grew wonderfully and bloomed gorgeously this spring. Suddenly parts began to wilt, so I planted it in the garden as quickly as possible. At first I thought it was too late, but even though it hasn't fully recovered yet, it's rewarding me once more with a few beautiful flowers.
Ich finde diese Clematis wunderschön. Anfangs hatte ich sie im Kübel, wo sie toll gewachsen ist und in diesem Frühjahr herrlich geblüht hat. Plötzlich fingen Teile an zu welken, so dass ich sie schnellstens in den Garten gepflanzt habe. Erst dachte ich, dass es zu spät ist, aber trotzdem sie sich noch nicht richtig erholt hat, belohnt sie mich jetz nochmal mit ein paar wunderschönen Blüten.

A great clematis! Piilu has been with me for 3 years. This year's transplanting to another bed she came through without any problem, which you can tell from how freely she flowers. Piilu is very robust, easy to care for and now 1.70 m tall.
