Clematis 'Fujimusume' was raised in 1952 by Japanese breeder Seejuuroo Arai from a cross of 'Asagiri' and 'The President'. Its name means "girl under wisteria bloom" and is the title of a traditional Japanese solo dance. The 8-10 cm, star-shaped flowers glow in a rich azure blue, formed of 6-8 slightly overlapping, velvety petals with yellow stamens at the centre.
At around 200 cm, 'Fujimusume' is excellent for trellises, obelisks and containers, and flowers from June to September. This compact variety thrives in almost any position — from full sun to semi-shade, and also on north-, east- or west-facing sites. Choose a sheltered spot with a cool, shaded root zone.
'Fujimusume' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June (pruning group 2); in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots. Decorative golden seedheads follow the flowers.
