Clematis urophylla 'Winter Beauty' is an evergreen wild-species selection from China; the clone grown in Europe originated in Japan and was named by Wim Snoeijer and Jan van Zoest. From December to February it opens small, nodding, urn-shaped bells: waxy white, slightly downy petals surround a striking boss of creamy stamens – one of the very few clematis that flower in the depths of winter.
Growing to around 300 cm, 'Winter Beauty' suits trellises, walls and other supports close to a sunny, sheltered spot. Its dark green, evergreen foliage stays attractive all year, making it an appealing wall cover even outside the flowering season. In mild climates it also thrives in a container, which should then be overwintered frost-free.
'Winter Beauty' is heat-loving and only moderately hardy (zone 9, down to about -6.6 °C) – well-drained soil and a sheltered position are essential, as the plant dislikes cold, waterlogged ground. Pruning is light: after flowering in March, cutting back to about 100 cm is enough to preserve its valuable flowering wood.

I have had "Winter Beauty" for 2 years now, and in both of these winters it set buds, then dropped all its leaves and buds. So I am rather dissatisfied with this clematis and am thinking of taking it out because it looks unsightly in springAutomatically translated · Show original
This is not a report of experience, but a note that the description for all "C. campanella" clearly points out that some varieties are not suitable for outdoor growing in Germany.Automatically translated · Show original
Hm - then the photos showing this clematis covered in snow should also be removed here. That is misleading.Automatically translated · Show original
well - those who can read have a clear advantage! you can hardly do more than divide them into cold zones. they are not 5 years old and looking at picture books! i think this service is great and this is the first site where i have found anything like it at all!Automatically translated · Show original
Hi, do you have to be so ironic? I come from Canada, mountain country, and there I try everything. Funnily enough, for example, I could plant three somewhat tender roses in three different places, and at least one, sometimes two, would take...
This clematis I have never seen, but I would certainly try it. (Near Lüneburg)
I bought two clematis armandi yesterday because of the beautiful leaves - now I read zone 9!! Hmmm!Automatically translated · Show original
