Clematis 'Jan Fopma' was selected by Dutch breeder Wim Snoeijer from the collection of Boskoop clematis connoisseur Jan Fopma, after whom it is named, and belongs to the Clematis diversifolia group. Its small, nodding, bell-shaped flowers with recurved tepal tips appear in dark purple, 5-6 cm across, with cream-coloured stamens and a mild fragrance reminiscent of chocolate.
Flowering takes place between July and August. At around 150 cm, 'Jan Fopma' stays pleasantly compact and suits smaller trellises, pots or a spot among border plants in a sunny to partially shaded position, where its fragrant flowers can be enjoyed up close.
'Jan Fopma' is winter-hardy to zone 5 (down to about -29 °C) and thrives in chalky, clay or sandy soils, provided they are moderately moist and well-drained. As a pruning group 3 variety, it is cut back to about 25 cm in March – this keeps it compact and encourages vigorous new growth with abundant flowers the same year. The variety is protected by Plant Breeders' Rights (PBR).
