Clematis integrifolia 'Alba' is a pure-white-flowered selection of the wild species, native to central and eastern Europe through to Central Asia. The nodding, bell-shaped flowers reach about 5 cm across, with four slender, slightly twisted sepals in pure white – occasionally tinged blue at the base – and creamy-white stamens; a pleasant fragrance adds to their appeal.
From June to September, 'Alba' produces a steady succession of new flowers on the current year's growth. At around 75 cm, it stays compact and does not climb on its own – the slender stems lean against neighbouring plants or a small support. This makes it an excellent choice for the perennial border, as a companion to roses and shrubs, or as a loose ground cover; it also thrives in containers on sunny patios. As a cut flower it lasts remarkably well in the vase.
'Alba' is very winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C) and dies back completely to the rootstock in winter. Cut the plant back to about 15 cm in March so it regrows vigorously and flowers freely. In a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil, it proves easy-going and low-maintenance.
