Clematis 'Rosea' was selected in 1952 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson from Clematis integrifolia var. latifolia and belongs to the Integrifolia Group of herbaceous clematis. Its 4 cm bell-shaped flowers hang nodding from the stem and show a delicate pink with a darker central bar on each sepal; the colour lightens further towards the slightly twisted tips. Yellow stamens and a pleasant, mild fragrance add to their appeal.
From June to July, 'Rosea' displays its flowers on the current year's growth. At around 75 cm, it stays compact and grows as a loose, woody-based clump without climbing on its own — ideal for the front of the border, as a companion to roses and shrubs, or in a container on the patio. It thrives best in a sunny spot with well-drained, moderately moist soil.
'Rosea' is very winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 °C) and dies back completely to the rootstock in winter. Cut the plant back hard to about 10 cm in March so it regrows vigorously and flowers freely. Give it a year or two to settle in — then the cultivar proves reliable and easy-care.
