Clematis montana 'Gothenburg' originated at Gothenburg Botanic Garden in Sweden and was introduced to Britain in 1993 by Raymond Evison via Magnus Johnson. It bears soft pink, fragrant flowers with prominent creamy stamens and a diameter of around 6 cm, carried on long stalks well above the foliage.
'Gothenburg' flowers from May to June and reaches a height of about 500 cm. This vigorous climber is ideal for trellises, pergolas and fences that need to be covered quickly and densely, and it grows well in any aspect. Its dark green, slightly bronzed foliage with a silvery midrib remains attractive after flowering.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 to -12.3 °C) and suits most Central European garden situations. For compact growth and abundant flowering the following year, prune back to about 100 cm in June; since Clematis montana flowers on the previous year's wood, pruning should follow shortly after flowering.
