Clematis 'Mrs Spencer Castle' comes from the English breeder G. Jackman & Son, dates from around 1913 and was on the market before 1924. Its 10–15 cm flowers are pink with violet bars on the sepals, set off by yellow-cream anthers on lilac-pink filaments. The early flowers are large and semi-double, while later ones come single.
At around 300 cm, 'Mrs Spencer Castle' climbs trellises, obelisks and other supports. It flowers from June to July. It is happiest in sun to partial shade in a sheltered position facing east, south or west; the soil should be moist but well-drained.
'Mrs Spencer Castle' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Allow two to five years until it reaches its full development.
