Clematis montana 'Tetrarose' was raised in 1960 at the Boskoop Research Station in the Netherlands as a descendant of Clematis montana var. rubens. Its 6–8 cm single flowers are rich pink and cup-shaped, made up of four sepals and set off by conspicuous golden-yellow stamens, with a spicy scent besides. The large bronze-green foliage sits on reddish-brown stems and contrasts beautifully with the flowers.
'Tetrarose' flowers in May and June and reaches around 500 cm in height. Its vigorous growth makes it a fitting companion for large supports, fences, trees and conifers, which it can cover with a wealth of blooms. It likes a not-too-moist position in full sun or partial shade; keep the root zone cool and shaded.
'Tetrarose' is hardy in zone 7 (down to about -18 °C). If needed, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June after flowering; heavy pruning is not necessary. Plant with the crown 5–8 cm deep so that it shoots strongly from the base. The Royal Horticultural Society has given the variety its Award of Garden Merit.
