Clematis 'Fair Rosamond' was raised as early as 1871 by the English nursery George Jackman & Son, from Clematis fortunei and Clematis patens, and takes its name from the legendary Rosamund Clifford, mistress to England's King Henry II in the 12th century. Its 12–15 cm flowers open white with pink bars that fade with age, set off by strikingly dark stamens and a pleasant, faintly violet-like scent.
'Fair Rosamond' flowers twice a year — first from May to June on last year's wood, then again, after a pause, from July to August. At around 200 cm, it suits trellises, climbing frames and containers in sheltered spots; since its delicate colour fades in strong sun, it shows to best advantage in semi-shade.
'Fair Rosamond' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and has proven itself as an easy-care garden plant for a century and a half. For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June.

Fair Rosamond stands on the north side of our house under the roof overhang on a trellis. It only gets morning sun there, yet it flowers very abundantly. It is also especially nice that it starts flowering very early.Automatically translated · Show original
A wonderful clematis! - However, it looks somewhat different with us...see photo....flowers as described above, very early indeed, stands with us against an east wall, sheltered, rather shady. A wonderful plant, and one of the first to greet us every spring. Was bought as Fair Rosamond from a well-known breeder.....??Automatically translated · Show original
