Clematis montana 'Van Gogh' was bred in 2001 by German breeder Willem Straver and named after the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The 5–7 cm, four-petalled flowers glow a rich red: a pale pink centre is framed by richly purple-red edged petals, set off by purple-bronze foliage. A pleasant fragrance rounds out the picture.
'Van Gogh' flowers from May to June on the previous year's wood and reaches 400 to 500 cm in height. Compared with other montana cultivars it grows more moderately, making it a good companion for climbing roses. It thrives in sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spots facing southwest, east or west, in moist, well-drained soil; it is not intended for container growing.
'Van Gogh' is winter-hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C). Since it flowers exclusively on last year's wood, prune it back to about 200 cm right after flowering in June rather than in early spring — this keeps the plant in shape without sacrificing next year's bloom.
