Clematis 'Golden Surprise' was bred by Polish grower Szczepan Marczyński and has been available since 2021. It belongs to the alpine clematis group (Clematis alpina & atragene) and bears 7-9 cm double to semi-double flowers in bright yellow with a pleasant grapefruit scent; the bell-shaped flowers hang nodding downwards.
The main flush appears in May and June, with occasional further flowers into August. At around 250-300 cm, 'Golden Surprise' suits fences, trellises and older tree trunks or shrubs that it can climb, and where left untrained it also works as a flowering ground cover. It thrives best in a bright spot without scorching midday sun, ideally with some shade during the hottest hours, and in well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil.
'Golden Surprise' is very winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C) and easy to grow. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Thanks to its robustness, this plant-protected (PBR) variety is also well suited for beginners.
