Clematis 'Aljonushka' was raised in 1961 by A.N. Volosenko-Valenis and M.A. Beskaravajnaja at the Botanic Gardens in the Crimea from 'Nezhdannyi' × Clematis integrifolia; its name is an affectionate form of the Russian girl's name Alyona. It belongs to the herbaceous Integrifolia hybrids and bears 7 cm nodding, bell-shaped flowers in warm pink with fleshy, often slightly twisted tepals and a darker central bar, set off by pale yellow-green anthers.
From June to August, 'Aljonushka' flowers tirelessly and abundantly. At around 200 cm it is ideal for scrambling through medium-sized shrubs, trailing as ground cover over low woody plants or enlivening an obelisk. As it does not cling by itself, tie in its shoots regularly or let it grow supported by neighbouring plants. It thrives in sun as well as semi-shade on south-, west- or east-facing aspects.
'Aljonushka' is very winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C) and is regarded as robust and wilt-resistant – a rewarding choice even for beginners. As it flowers on the current season's growth, cut the plant back hard to about 15 cm in March. For its garden merit it received the RHS Award of Garden Merit, the RHS Award of Merit in 1995 and the British Clematis Society Certificate of Merit in 1998.

Beautiful, fast-growing clematis. It has to be tied up, it doesn’t hold itself up. But it does reach a height of about 200 cm. With regular deadheading it flowers freely until the first frost.Automatically translated · Show original
