Clematis macropetala 'Jan Lindmark' traces back to a seedling of 'Blue Bird' selected in 1981 by the Swedish clematis expert Jan Lindmark; it was named after him by Magnus Johnson. The violet, 6 to 8 cm flowers hang in nodding bells from the stems, their four tepals slightly twisted and marked with deeper streaks.
'Jan Lindmark' flowers from April to May on the previous year's wood and reaches a height of around 300 cm. This makes it well suited to trellises, wire supports and fences, though it can also be grown in a large container. It thrives in sunny to partially shaded spots in well-drained soil.
The variety is very hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and considered robust and easy to grow. For vigorous growth and abundant flowers the following year, cut 'Jan Lindmark' back to about 100 cm in June.
