Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' is a variety of the evergreen Chinese Armand clematis known since around 1930. Deep pink buds open into pale pink, bowl-shaped flowers 4-6 cm across with cream stamens that fade paler as they age, along with a delicate vanilla scent.
This early abundance of flowers appears from March to April, set against dense, leathery, deep green foliage that emerges bronze when young. At around 400 cm, 'Apple Blossom' suits trellises and climbing frames on a sheltered, sunny to part-shaded south- or south-west-facing wall — for example a warm courtyard, a cold greenhouse or a conservatory; container culture is possible too.
'Apple Blossom' is not fully hardy (zone 9, -6.6 to -1.2 °C) and therefore needs a sheltered spot. Cut the plant back to about 200 cm after flowering in May — this pruning-group-1 variety needs no further care than that. In containers, a slightly harder cut back helps keep growth compact.

This clematis is my favourite. It is absolutely easy-care and evergreen. My Apple Blossom grows 1.50 m behind the climbing rose Nahema. In the meantime it has stretched its "arms" out to the right and left over about 4 metres. The "head" forms, by means of a tall, wide trellis, the 2 m wide background for the rose. The two "arms" are held by strong chains about 2 m above the ground. Because of the mild climate zone, our display of blooms starts as early as the beginning of February and reaches its peak in April/May. The very abundant flowering (the leaves are hardly visible then :-) and the indescribably delicious fragrance magically attract both the insects and the eyes of neighbours/visitors. This clematis and my Appleblossom (10 years old) are absolutely disease-resistant. During the growing season I feed them every 2 weeks with my homemade nettle, horsetail and comfrey fresh-plant liquid manure (1 l to 10 l of water). After flowering I merely trim the long shoots that form into shape. For some years now, thanks to the mild weather, my two darlings have flowered a second time in July, with a reduced number of blooms.Automatically translated · Show original
