Clematis 'Triternata Rubromarginata' is a classic garden hybrid from 1862, raised by Thomas Cripps of Tunbridge Wells, England, from a cross between C. flammula and C. viticella. The Latin cultivar name means 'red-edged' – an apt description of its enchanting flowers: the 3–4 cm, star-shaped blooms glow in soft violet-pink, lightening to white at the centre, while the tepals are bordered by vivid reddish-purple. Pale yellowish-green stamens add a bright contrasting accent. What truly sets this variety apart, however, is its captivating fragrance: rich and sweet, reminiscent of marzipan and almonds, with delicate hawthorn notes – on warm days it drifts across the entire garden.
From July to September, 'Triternata Rubromarginata' opens literally hundreds of its small flowers in dense panicles, turning its support into a fragrant sea of blossom. At around 250 cm tall, it is perfect for pergolas, obelisks, fences and walls, and also combines beautifully with other climbers or shrubs. Plant it near a terrace, window or garden bench to enjoy its marzipan fragrance to the full. It thrives in sunny to partially shaded positions; in a warm, sheltered, sunny spot it flowers most abundantly and scents most intensely. Bees and butterflies are frequent and welcome visitors.
Hardy to -17.7 °C (Zone 7), 'Triternata Rubromarginata' is well suited to Central European gardens. Prune in March, cutting the stems back to around 20 cm above ground level – this hard cut (pruning group 3) stimulates vigorous new growth and ensures a lavish display each year. As a hybrid of C. flammula and C. viticella, it inherits the robust, unfussy character of its parent species, making it an easy choice even for less experienced gardeners. The Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM) confirms its outstanding garden value.

This clematis, which smells wonderfully of almond, grows sheltered against a wall at a neighbour's. It gets sun from late midday until sunset and twines around a garden bench, which thus invites sweet dreams. Grows vigorously despite the rather delicate shoots.
I can only recommend it to everyone.Automatically translated · Show original
