Clematis 'fusca var. violacea' is a wild form from East Asia, related to the Viorna group, the so-called leather flowers. It comes from Korea and the Amur River region, which forms the border between China and Russia; it was first recorded in 1859 as C. fusca var. violacea. In the literature you will also meet the same plant under the name Clematis ianthina. The fragrant flowers, about 3 cm across, are violet and urn-shaped; their four grooved tepals are narrowly lanceolate, 2 to 3 cm long, with tips that curve back. Do not confuse it with the hairy, dark brown variety kamtschatica.
The plant shows its flowers from June to July. At about 200 cm in height it climbs up a trellis, frame or obelisk, which makes it easy to place even in smaller gardens. It thrives in sunny to partially shaded positions in well-drained soil.
'fusca var. violacea' is quite hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut it back to about 25 cm in March; as a pruning group 3 plant it flowers on the new growth and shoots vigorously after this pruning.
