Clematis 'Pinocchio' is a 2026 novelty bred by Polish clematis specialist Szczepan Marczyński and belongs to the Viorna Group. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers reach 6 to 8 cm and display a violet colour with irregular white speckles – an unusual pattern that makes this variety stand out among leather flowers.
'Pinocchio' flowers in two phases: from June to July and again from September to October. Reaching a height of 200 to 250 cm, it is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other climbing supports, and also likes to scramble through neighbouring shrubs. Like most Viorna Group varieties, it prefers a sunny position that is not too windy and rewards consistent watering in rich soil with abundant flowering.
This variety is very hardy (zone 4, down to around -34 °C). For vigorous growth and plentiful flowers, cut 'Pinocchio' back hard to about 10 cm in March – typical for the semi-herbaceous Viorna clematis, which can die back to the ground in severe winters and re-shoot the following spring.
