Clematis 'Scented Clem' was selected by Dutch breeder Ton Hannink, named in 2011 and introduced in 2013 – a chance seedling from the Clematis cadmia relationship and thus closely related to the viticella group. Its 5 to 10 cm flowers glow violet-blue and carry a pronounced, sweet fragrance, which has also made this variety known as 'Sugar Sweet Blue' and 'Magical Scent'.
Growing 200 to 350 cm tall, 'Scented Clem' climbs vigorously on trellises, obelisks and trellage and also thrives in a large container. From May to August it produces its fragrant flowers in abundance – a spot in sun to part shade, with a cool, shaded root run, suits it best.
'Scented Clem' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and easy to care for: regular pruning is not necessary; if needed, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June, straight after flowering.
