The clematis 'Royal Velours' was bred in France in 1914 by Morel and received the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Countless 5 to 6 cm flowers appear on the fresh growth in velvety dark purple, with four to six slightly overlapping sepals and contrasting stamens; in very sunny spots the colour appears somewhat lighter.
From July to September, 'Royal Velours' continues to produce new flowers and reaches a height of around 300 cm. The variety is excellent for trellises, arbours and larger containers, and looks striking combined with pale roses or other light-foliaged shrubs, against which the dark flowers stand out beautifully. It makes no special demands on site or care, tolerates windy positions well and is considered resistant to clematis wilt.
Hardy to zone 5 (around -28.8 to -23.4 °C), 'Royal Velours' is well suited to local gardens. It belongs to pruning group 3: cut the stems back to about 25 cm in March to encourage vigorous new flowering growth.

Wonderful clematis with velvety, dark red, small flowers. Grows very vigorously with long internodes. I only have 1 plant - which doesn't do it justice. 2 - 3 should probably be planted to achieve a lush effect.
I like its flower very much, only that saved it, because it is prone to mildew. Some day I will probably replace it for that reason.
