Clematis 'Walenburg' was discovered around 1990 by D. M. van Gelderen in the garden of the old Walenburg castle in Langbroek, the Netherlands, and named after it. Its 6–8 cm flowers are violet with a white centre running along each sepal, set off by a tuft of pale green stamens. The buds hang nodding at first, then turn upright and star-shaped once fully open.
'Walenburg' flowers on the current year's growth from July to September and reaches about 250 cm in height. It is well suited to fences, trellises and obelisks, but is equally happy clambering into small trees or shrubs, or trailing as ground cover. It thrives in a sunny to semi-shaded spot with a cool, shaded root area.
Clematis 'Walenburg' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C) and belongs to pruning group 3: cut it back to about 25 cm in March to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering. Thanks to its striking colour and its RHS Award of Garden Merit, it makes a popular companion for climbing roses and other shrubs.

She wants to reach for the sky! Despite being pruned back to about 30 cm every year, she easily makes 2.5 m over the summer and flowers lavishly and for a long time on well-branched shoots. The flowers are a little "nodding", but at the height she reaches that is actually quite lovely.

This clematis is a sight to behold. When it is in flower, you can hardly see any of the foliage. In my garden (Allgäu) it easily reaches 2.50 - 3.00 m.Automatically translated · Show original
