Clematis 'Violet Lampion', also listed under the cultivar name 'Orion', was bred by the Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński and introduced in 2024. For an Atragene clematis its flowers are unusually large: the single, bell-shaped blooms measure 8-12 cm and consist of four deep violet petals with yellow anthers. They are set off by large, dark green, glossy leaves.
The main flowering period runs from April to June, and 'Violet Lampion' occasionally shows further flowers in summer. At around 250 cm it remains a compact climber that clothes fences, pergolas and garden supports as well as shrubs, old tree stumps or rocks; it can also be used as ground cover. It grows in sun to partial shade, ideally in well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil.
'Violet Lampion' is very hardy (zone 4, -34.4 to -28.9 °C) and easy to care for, as it needs no regular pruning. If you wish to keep the plant compact, cut your clematis back to about 100 cm in June.
