The Clematis JOHN HOWELLS (cultivar name 'Zojohnhowells') was selected in 1999 by Dutch breeder Wim Snoeijer and introduced by J. van Zoest BV in 2008. It is named after Dr John Howells, a knowledgeable clematis enthusiast and founding member of the British Clematis Society. Its 6-8 cm, bell-shaped to almost flat-opening flowers show 4 to 6 tepals in red to purple-red, with a dark purple-red style and a strikingly paler-striped reverse.
JOHN HOWELLS flowers from late June into early September on the current season's growth. Reaching around 300 cm, this vigorous climber suits trellises, fences and obelisks in a sunny position and belongs to the Clematis viticella group.
JOHN HOWELLS is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to around -28 °C). As a pruning group 3 variety, it is cut back hard to about 25 cm in March – this encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowering on new wood.
