Clematis 'Columella' was raised in 1979 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson from Clematis koreana var. fragrans and Clematis macropetala 'Rosy O'Grady', and named after the Roman agricultural writer Columella. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers measure about 8 cm and consist of four lanceolate, slightly twisted tepals with recurved tips: violet to deep pink-purple outside with a creamy-white edge, creamy pink inside, with cream staminodes. Its special trait — the flowers are fragrant, a legacy of its Korean parent.
'Columella' flowers from April to May, making it one of the last atragenes of spring; a second flush sometimes follows in summer. At around 250 cm it suits fences, trellises and obelisks, but can also be led through shrubs or over tree stumps. It thrives in sunny as well as semi-shaded spots and on all aspects — in sunny places the scent is strongest. From June, fluffy seed heads adorn the plant.
'Columella' is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and undemanding. Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Choose a spot with well-drained soil, as atragene clematis do not tolerate waterlogging.
