Clematis 'Chalcedony' was raised by the English breeder Ellis Strachan of Plymouth and has been known since 1984; its parents are given as 'Vyvyan Pennell' and 'Marie Boisselot'. Its 10–12 cm flowers appear in pale violet and are double to semi-double with many petal-like staminodes.
From June to August 'Chalcedony' adorns trellises, obelisks and climbing supports, reaching about 250 cm in height. Choose a wind-sheltered spot with well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil.
'Chalcedony' is fully hardy (zone 6, -23.3 to -17.8 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to 100 cm in June.
