Clematis 'Ruriokoshi' is an old Japanese selection of Clematis patens: as early as the Edo period (1603–1868), the pale violet form emerged through selection and possibly breeding, and it is known in the literature as forma coerulescens Makino. Its flowers measure 8–10 cm across and show a delicate, pale violet that suits its elegant, open flower shape.
At around 200 cm in height, 'Ruriokoshi' stays manageable and is well suited to trellises, obelisks and climbing frames. It flowers in late spring, from May to June.
'Ruriokoshi' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 75 cm in June – a targeted pruning encourages vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
