Clematis 'Picotee' comes from the Dutch breeding programme of J. van Zoest and was registered with the International Clematis Society in 2015 under the cultivar code Zo09124. Its flowers, up to 14 cm across, show a classic picotee pattern: pure white, pointed-tipped petals with a bold crimson to cerise-pink margin and striking purplish stamens.
At around 200 cm, 'Picotee' suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well, and also thrives in containers on balcony or terrace. The main flush appears from May to June, followed by an equally generous second flush from July to August. The variety does well in full sun as well as semi-shade, and also suits east-, west- and south-facing spots.
'Picotee' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 2. Cut the plant back to about 75 cm in June after the first flowering to encourage the late-summer flush. As the sap can irritate skin, wear gloves when pruning.
