Clematis 'Tie Dye' originated in the USA in 2000 as a sport of the well-known cultivar 'Jackmanii' and was introduced by J. P. van Laeken. Its 10–15 cm flowers show a striking violet-purple colouring: each of the four to five elliptical to rhomboid, slightly wavy tepals is irregularly marbled with white, especially along the central bar, complemented by red stamens on pale green filaments.
'Tie Dye' flowers from June to July and reaches a height of 300 to 500 cm — making it ideal for tall trellises, pergolas and other sturdy supports where there is enough room for vigorous growth. The plant thrives in both full sun and partial shade and can be planted in almost any aspect, including north-, east- or west-facing walls.
With hardiness zone 4 (down to about -34 °C), 'Tie Dye' is exceptionally frost-hardy and reliably survives harsh winters outdoors. As a pruning group 3 cultivar, cut it back hard to about 25 cm in March — it will then send up fresh growth from the base and develop its full flowering display in season.
