Clematis 'Freedom' was selected in 2005 by the Dutch breeder Wim Snoeijer (J. van Zoest Beheer BV) and introduced in 2015. Its 10–14 cm flowers glow a rich red, lightening towards the centre to almost white, surrounded by attractive, very pale stamens. The first flush in spring shows 8 tepals, followed by summer blooms with 6 – both flushes are prolific and long-lasting.
Growing to around 200 cm, 'Freedom' climbs vigorously on trellises, obelisks and trellis frames and is equally happy in a container. After the first flowering in May and June, a second, equally generous flush follows from July to August. The variety tolerates full sun and has no other special site requirements.
'Freedom' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). For a strong second flush, cut the stems back to about 75 cm after the first flowering in June – the typical care for pruning group 2.
