Clematis 'Fryderyk Chopin' was bred by Brother Stefan Franczak in Poland and is named after the Polish composer and pianist, who was born and spent his childhood in Żelazowa Wola, about 50 km west of Warsaw. Its flowers measure 12–15 cm across and are violet. The six overlapping sepals have wavy, ruffled edges and roll back at the tips, with cream-coloured stamens at the centre of the bloom.
At around 300 cm tall, 'Fryderyk Chopin' climbs fences, walls, arbours, pergolas, trellises and poles, and can also be grown up through large shrubs. It is particularly useful in small gardens and copes with any aspect – south, north, east or west facing. The flowering season runs from June to August.
'Fryderyk Chopin' is hardy to zone 6 (down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March.
