Clematis 'Frau Mikiko' was raised in 1993 by the Japanese breeder Kozo Sugimoto and is named after his wife, Mikiko Sugimoto. It is one of the cultivars from the Sugimoto nursery in Toki-City that found their way into Western gardens early on. Its flowers measure about 15 cm across and come in a rich dark violet-blue. Six elliptic, finely pointed sepals with wavy margins carry a red bar that is most noticeable towards the base, while yellow anthers add a bright contrast at the centre.
At around 200 cm tall, 'Frau Mikiko' climbs up a support. The first flush appears from May to June, with a second flush following from July to August. The cultivar thrives in any aspect, so you are not tied to a particular direction when choosing a position.
'Frau Mikiko' is hardy (zone 6, -23.3 to -17.8 °C). For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. It is supplied in a 2-litre pot with strong shoots.
