The clematis 'Palette' was bred in 2016 by Wim Snoeijer (J. van Zoest B.V.) in the Netherlands. Its 10 to 12 cm flowers with 6 to 8 tepals glow purple-violet, lightening towards the centre, with a bold dark purple-red edge and yellow stamens – a play of colour that lives up to the cultivar's name.
'Palette' flowers twice: the first, usually most abundant flush appears from May to June, with a second wave of flowers following in July and August. At around 200 cm tall, the variety suits trellises, obelisks and climbing frames well, and it is also excellent for container growing – ideal for a patio or balcony too.
'Palette' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 °C). It belongs to pruning group 2: after the first flush, cut the shoots back to around 75 cm in June so the plant flowers vigorously again in late summer.
