Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' was raised in 1873 by the English breeder Charles Noble from a cross between 'Fortunei' and Jackmanii, making it one of the oldest clematis cultivars still in cultivation today. Its large, lavender-blue flowers with six to eight elongated sepals show the characteristic pinwheel shape with clearly visible gaps between the petals, set off by contrasting coffee-brown stamens. The first flowers of the season are sometimes semi-double.
From May to June and again from July to September, 'Mrs Cholmondeley' reliably shows off its floral display. At around 200 cm in height, it is well suited to trellises, climbing frames and obelisks, and grows equally well in containers. The variety tolerates any aspect – from full sun to semi-shade – making it a dependable choice even for less favourable spots.
'Mrs Cholmondeley' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993. Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June after the first flush to encourage vigorous new growth and a rich second flowering. As a robust, easy-care historic variety, it thrives reliably even in more challenging locations.

Mrs Cholmondely is growing together with a Piilu up an obelisk and is quite vigorous. It has lovely lush foliage. The flowers are a beautiful wisteria blue and relatively large. The petals overlap slightly. This year, because of the harsh winter, I had to cut it back to the ground. But since early May the first new shoots are already visible, growing ahead quickly. By summer it will have reached its original size again.Automatically translated · Show original
