Clematis 'Esther' comes from the Dutch breeder J van Zoest: raised in 2007, it was named and introduced in 2015. Its 8–10 cm flowers glow in a violet-blue, slightly shimmering shade that looks even more intense as they open. Six to eight overlapping tepals with slightly wavy margins frame white filaments with dark purple anthers.
Very free-flowering, 'Esther' bears its flowers in two flushes: from May to June and again from July to August. At around 200 cm tall, it suits a trellis, wall grid or obelisk. It has no special demands on position or soil and also tolerates full sun.
'Esther' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, -23.3 to -17.8 °C). Cut it back to about 75 cm after the first flowering in June.
