Clematis viticella 'Avant-Garde' belongs to the Viticella group (Italian clematis) and was bred by Raymond Evison. Its violet and white flowers measure 5 to 7 cm across and appear from June to September. It is also suitable for beginners.
It grows to 4 to 5 m and is suited to a pergola, fence, trellis or climbing frame. Varieties of the Viticella group are considered robust and flower late in the year. It likes a sunny to partly shaded position, with the root zone kept shaded.
Pruning group 3 (hard pruning): cut back to about 25 cm in March. Hardy to about -29 °C (hardiness zone 5).
