The clematis 'Lech Walesa' was bred by Polish nurseryman Szczepan Marczyński from a cross with 'Mrs Cholmondeley' and named in 2003 after the former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa – the wavy, gently curled tepals are said to resemble his distinctive moustache. The flowers appear in pale blue, 10 to 12 cm across, with six overlapping tepals and a pale cluster of stamens at the centre.
'Lech Walesa' flowers profusely from June to August and reaches a height of around 250 cm. The variety climbs vigorously on trellises, pergolas and obelisks, but is equally suited to container growing on a patio or balcony. A bright spot sheltered from the midday sun and, ideally, from strong wind suits it best; the flower colour stands out especially well against a dark background.
'Lech Walesa' is reliably hardy (zone 6, to about -23°C) and thrives readily in the garden. For care, cut the stems back to about 25 cm in March so the plant regrows vigorously and flowers freely. Named after Lech Wałęsa, the variety was awarded a gold medal at the Plantarium show in the Netherlands in 2005 for its elaborately waved petals.
