Clematis 'Lilactime' was bred by English hybridiser Ken Pyne from 'Alice Fisk' and an unknown cultivar. It was introduced in 1992, named in honour of the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The 15 cm flowers are violet-blue and semi-double, with six to eight slightly wavy sepals and dark red anthers on white filaments.
The first flush appears in June, followed by a second flowering from July to August. At around 200 cm, 'Lilactime' suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well; thanks to its compact habit it also thrives in containers at least 45 cm deep and wide. It does equally well in sun or partial shade.
'Lilactime' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and a rich flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. As the sap can irritate the skin, wearing gloves during pruning is advisable.
