Clematis 'Kiri Te Kanawa' was raised in 1986 by English breeder Barry Fretwell from a cross of 'Chalcedony' and 'Beauty of Worcester', and named after the New Zealand soprano Kiri Te Kanawa. Its 7-10 cm flowers open densely double in rich violet-blue with creamy stamens; the earliest blooms in early summer appear more intensely coloured than the later second flush.
'Kiri Te Kanawa' flowers twice: in June and again from July to August – and unusually for a double-flowered clematis, the double blooms appear on both last year's growth and new wood. At around 200 cm, the variety suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well, and also grows happily in containers on a patio or balcony; a sunny to semi-shaded spot with some shelter from heavy rain benefits the delicate double flowers.
'Kiri Te Kanawa' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and copes well even in colder locations. For strong growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; since it also blooms on old wood, keep pruning moderate so as not to sacrifice the early-summer flush.

Kiri Te Kanawa is a very beautiful clematis. Her bright blue flowers are large and always double, even in autumn. Bloom period at mine:
2007: from 16.09. to 10.11. (56 days, 1st flowering year)
2008: from 24.06. without a break in flowering until today (09.11.2008). That makes 139 days so far.
She is very healthy and forms many small buds above a flower (see photo 1), which I have not yet seen on any of my clematis. That gives the picture of a lavish bloom, although she is only in her 2nd flowering year.
She lives together with the salmon-coloured rose „William Morris“ - a lovely combination.
