Clematis 'Voluceau' was raised around 1970 by the French breeder A. Girault of Orléans from a cross between 'Ville de Lyon' and 'Pourpre Mat'. Its flowers are 8–10 cm across and glow in a rich petunia-red; usually six to eight sepals frame the yellow stamens at the centre of the bloom.
At around 300 cm, 'Voluceau' climbs vigorously up trellises, obelisks and other supports. It flowers from July to September. Choose a sunny to semi-shaded spot with moist but well-drained soil.
'Voluceau' is hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Since the flowers appear on the current year's growth, it tolerates a hard cut: for vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut 'Voluceau' back to about 50 cm in March.
