Clematis 'W.E. Gladstone' was introduced in 1881 by the British breeder Charles Noble and named after the then British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. The variety ranks among the largest-flowered clematis of its time: the blue blooms reach 15 to 20 cm across, are single-flowered with 6 to 8 slightly recurved tepals, and carry striking stamens.
From June to September, 'W.E. Gladstone' produces its floral display in several flushes. With a height of about 350 cm, this vigorous climber is ideal for trellises, arbours and obelisks in sunny to partly shaded positions, where it quickly covers larger areas.
'W.E. Gladstone' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 °C) and rewards an annual pruning back to about 50 cm in March with vigorous new growth and abundant flowering throughout the season.
