Clematis 'Violetta' arose as a seedling of the well-known 'Nelly Moser' at the nursery of German breeder F. M. Westphal, who raised it in 1989 and presented it in 1994 at the International Clematis Society's annual conference in Elmshorn. Its 10–15 cm star-shaped flowers appear in a rich violet, carried on six to eight narrow, pointed sepals with dark anthers on pale filaments.
'Violetta' flowers in June and, after a short pause, produces a second flush from July to August. At around 300 cm, the variety suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well and can be shown off on fences, pergolas or house walls.
'Violetta' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and correspondingly undemanding to care for. For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June – a light pruning typical for large-flowered hybrids of this group.
