Clematis 'Azure Ball' was bred in 1999 by the Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński, named in 2013 and on the market since 2016. Its large, 15-17 cm flowers are double to semi-double, with 20 to 40 elongated, pointed, light blue-violet petals and yellow stamens on white filaments.
From May to July the flowers appear abundantly on both old and new growth. Reaching up to 300 cm, 'Azure Ball' is excellent for trellises, obelisks, fences or other supports, clinging on with its leaf stalks. It thrives best in a sunny but not overly hot spot with fertile, moderately moist, well-drained soil.
'Azure Ball' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 2: cut the shoots back to about 75 cm in March so the plant sprouts vigorously and flowers abundantly.
