Clematis 'Mary Rose' is an old double-flowered viticella that English nurseryman Barry Fretwell reintroduced in the early 1980s; it was named after the Tudor warship 'Mary Rose', raised from the Solent in 1982. Its 3–4 cm flowers are purple-violet, slightly nodding and filled into rosettes of many sepals, with a dark, velvety sheen reminiscent of Welsh slate.
From July to September 'Mary Rose' opens flower after flower, reaching around 300 cm in height. It climbs trellises, fences and obelisks and is a rewarding companion for roses; the dark flowers look especially good against a pale wall or a white fence. It thrives in sun as well as semi-shade and copes with any aspect. After flowering the sepals drop cleanly.
'Mary Rose' is very winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -29 °C). It flowers on new growth: cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March and it shoots vigorously and flowers freely. Its robustness and forgiving nature make it a good choice for beginners.
